There a two common ways to express affection in Italian: "Ti amo" and "Ti voglio bene".

Ti amo

[tee AH-moh]

​

Used to express romantic love. Ti amo literally means "You I love". Only for romantic relationships.

​

• Ti = you
• Amo is the first-person singular (present tense) of the verb "amare", to love.

​

Ti voglio bene

[tee VOH-lyoh BEH-neh]

​

Use to express deep affection for friends or family to show that you care about them. It's for plantonic relationships. Ti voglio bene literally means "I want you well" or "I want good to you" but is expressed as "I love you" in a platonic, non-romantic way.

• Ti = you
• Voglio = I want (First person presnt tense form of the verb volere, to want.)
• bene = well / good

Anch'io - I love you too

Anch'io is how to say "me too" or "I also". Io is the pronoun for "I".

​

• Anch'io ti voglio bene or Ti voglio bene anch'io
• Ti amo anch'io or Anch'io ti amo

Examples

• Non posso immaginare la mia vita senza di te. Ti amo. – I can’t imagine my life without you. I love you.
• Ti amo con tutto il mio cuore. – I love you with all my heart.

• Ti voglio bene come a un fratello. – I care about you like a brother.
• Anche se litighiamo, ti voglio sempre bene. – Even if we argue, I always care about you.
